The problem of drug abuse is no less in Massachusetts as is anywhere else. The numbers of rehab centers that dot the city speak for them. In Massachusetts, one out of every ten person aged 12 years and more are addicted to drugs or alcohols. This statistic comes across as a shocking fact to many. A whooping number of 39,700 people are undergoing
drug abuse treatment. This figure is just among the reported cases. Many more cases go unreported and are not included in the figure. The cost is very high that the government has to deal with due to violence, accidents, injuries, crimes and lower productivity. These are the problems related to drug abuse and the cost of amending these losses are taken from the pockets of the tax paying people. This money if not wasted on these problems can be used for the well being of the citizens. Hence the problem of drug abuse not only affects a person on a personal level, the whole population of Massachusetts suffers with it. Millions are spent each year by the Commonwealth on drug related crimes and health care. This money could easily be spent on some other meaningful purposes if the problem of drug abuse is curbed. Millions are lost every year in Massachusetts due to lower productivity which in turn is due to the problem of drug abuse and alcohol addiction. There has been a sky high increase in the crimes that are related to drugs and alcohols. The government is spending lots of money and effort on these crimes. It needs be have systematic approach towards this problem so that there is a decrease in the unmet need. The government has to put a stop to drug shipping altogether. The availability of drugs is the root cause of all problems. Once there will be a scarcity of drugs, the problem will be solved in minutes. The millions that are spent on these problems can be used in building a better state and looking after the problems of the needy. Why should the money that the citizens pay as tax go down in the drains? The hard earned money is more than its worth. Curbing this problem will lead to a saving of lives as well as dollars. It’s high time a serious thought I given to prevention rather than cure. If more thought is given to cure, the process will continue endlessly. The state has to find newer ways to curb this problem.
